Afro was founded in 1999 by Peter Ekengren and Arvid Nerdal. At the first concert, in the spring of 1999, the choir only included ten singers accompanied by piano and congas. But as the rumour was spread, the choir grew. Today it includes about twenty-five singers and seven musicians, and more singers are standing in line to join.
Afro started doing shows outside churches in 2002 and the real break-through came in 2003 during the Kirchentag in Berlin, Germany. Since then Afro has been touring Germany on several occasions, and has a profound fan-base there.
